David Lloyd Warrington Moves to Tackle
Child Obesity
Brand New Childrens Gym Launching May 29th
December 2004 - In a major new
innovation to encourage more children to get more active,
David Lloyd Warrington has confirmed plans to open a
state-of-the-art facility exclusively for children aged
from 3 years to 15 years. The colourful new gymnasium
and Childrens Activity areas have been carefully
designed to appeal to children and the exercise
equipment is specifically built to suit their physiology
in a controlled and fun way.
David Lloyd Warrington general manager
Jennie Miles, whose team already operates one of the
largest childrens exercise programmes in the country,
expects the club to be able to cater for up to 48 children
per hour. The activities and gym area, which will both
be supervised by an expert health and fitness team,
will be free for junior members and children of existing
members. Exercise
equipment will include 9 pieces of resistance equipment,
9 pieces of Cardiovascular equipment, and new childrens
classes such as Spinning and Circuit Training
will be added to the successful High 5 classes
already attracting hundreds of kids on a weekly basis.
David Lloyd Leisure has also imported
from the U.S a SmartBall Sportwall, a huge
interactive wall where children have to simultaneously
track a ball, targets, sounds and scores. The equipment
is designed to be exciting and rewarding, but at the
same time gives them a full body workout. Initial trials
this week have shown children to be thoroughly entertained
and almost oblivious to the
fitness they are developing!
The area is due to be completed shortly,
and the club will hold a Bank Holiday Open Weekend on
May 29th-31st to celebrate. Paul Cullen, head coach
for Warrington Wolves, will be guest of honour to officially
open the new areas. Throughout the weekend, children
and their families will be able to tour the facility
as well as the rest of David Lloyd Warrington, and a
series of taster sessions will be available. Members
of the public are invited to call the Warrington club
on 01925 258300 to arrange their visit.
Jennie comments, we are all aware
of the growing problem of childhood obesity - Introducing
children to regular sporting activity or exercise is
vital from an early age. There is no quick fix so we
have to be sure it is done in a fun and safe environment
where children will enjoy themselves and will want to
return regularly. We have a vast amount of experience
of working with children to
inspire them and to improve their health. The new gym
and activity areas are fantastic additions to our programme.
The facility is being built in an area
formerly used for conferences, and will be fully open
from May 29th.
